Periodontics, Endodontics, and Orthodontics
Periodontics involves the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal disease. Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, is an inflammation and infection of the gum tissues. It includes the stages commonly known as gingivitis and periodontitis. Periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults.
When plaque and tartar are left untreated on teeth and gums, gum disease may develop. You can reduce your risk of gum disease by brushing twice and flossing once every day. You should also have a dental exam and professional cleaning at least twice each year.
Gingivitis includes a variety mild to moderate symptoms, such as red, swollen gums, sensitive teeth, gums bleeding from normal brushing or eating, chronic halitosis (bad breath), and difficulty or pain chewing.
Periodontitis is a more advanced form of gum disease. In this case, gums begin to pull away from teeth, creating small “pockets” along the gum line. Tooth loss, bone loss, and damage to gums and soft tissues can occur with periodontitis.
Root canal therapy treats the center, or pulp, of a tooth that is inflamed, infected or dead. The pulp is a soft substance consisting of nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue.
Symptoms of infection include visible injury or swelling, sensitivity to temperature, or pain in the tooth and gums. If you experience any of these symptoms, contact First Impressions Dentistry for a consultation.
Root canal therapy involves removing the pulp from the tooth chamber and canals. We then clean the canals with a disinfecting solution. During your root canal therapy, we may provide local anesthesia or sedation to ensure your complete comfort.
Orthodontics impacts your health, appearance, and more. Crooked, unevenly spaced, or misaligned teeth are harder to keep clean. This makes them more prone to tooth decay and periodontal disease. Straight, properly aligned teeth are easier to keep clean and provide a more attractive appearance. A straight, healthy smile helps to boost self-esteem, self-confidence, and your self-image.
Invisalign® is a set of clear removable aligners that are worn over the teeth. These aligners can be removed to allow you to eat, brush, and floss normally. Invisalign® is comfortable, convenient, and easy to use. Invisalign® is a non-invasive, aesthetic solution for straightening teeth. If your teeth are crowded, gapped, or misaligned, Invisalign® can give you a healthier, more beautiful smile.
Most comprehensive orthodontic treatment will involve the use of braces or aligners. In either case, your treatment involves minor movement of your teeth to correct misalignment. This ensures both a straight smile and an even bite.
However, braces are not the only stage needed for a permanent orthodontic solution. Once your braces have been taken off, the retention phase begins. It is vitally important to follow through with retention to maintain your straight smile after treatment. Your final orthodontic results depend on your retainer, so be sure to keep your appointments with Dr. Cole even after your braces have been removed.
